On the first Friday of every month, the Uptown Arts District holds a fun community event called First Fridays.
This social springtime event contains many interesting things for people of all ages. Stores, boutiques, businesses, and art galleries open up their doors to the public offering drinks, food, and lots of fun.
Through First Fridays people are offered a different range of exciting fun things to participate in.
This upcoming First Friday event, will be held on May 2nd, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.  The Lubeznik Center For The Arts on May 2nd during First Fridays will be hosting a poetry slam from 5:00-8:00 P.M.
Each poet must have three poems prpared under three minutes each. More information on the poetry slam is on the Lubeznik Center For The Arts website.
The Lubeznik Center is just one of the many places that are open during First Fridays and is a great place to stop. Not only are different art galleries and boutiques open but so are the different restaurants along Franklin Street.
First Fridays was originally created by artists and business owners in the Michigan City area.
This event is a great way for people to meet other people in the Michigan City community.
Meg Caplice one of the owners of Darling said, “First Fridays brings people to the boutique that might not have walked through otherwise.” Darling is just one of the many stores that participates in First Fridays.
At Darling on First Fridays, there always is an artist of the month, music, and beverages for people to enjoy.
Coming soon on a future First Friday Darling will have a station outside of their store to create children’s art. This will be a really fun activity for children to participste in.
Another store that participates in First Fridays is Urban Soles.
Like Darling Urban Soles  serves appetizers and drinks.
Sometimes they have the local artists who make their scarves come in for First Fridays.
First Fridays is a perfect way to support our community and local business people.  It also is a great way to suppot our local artists.
Not only do artists, stores, and businesses participate in First Fridays so do some restaurants. Some restaurants put out samples for people to enjoy.
People travel to Michigan City from all around to participate in First Fridays. This is something that makes our town especially unique.
This springtime event is beneficial to everyone involved, as it provides recognition for local artists, business for stores and restaurants, and great fun for anyone who comes to enjoy it.
