Let’s Listen: Prhyme

On September 15, 2014 it was announced that Royce da 5’9” and DJ Premier would release a collaborative album named Prhyme. Prhyme is a hip hop album released on December 9, 2014. This 35 minute debut album for the duo Royce da 5’9” and DJ Premier has instantly become a classic in the hip hop community.

DJ Premier is a master DJ and producer who is considered a legend on the turn tables. Premier uses his skills to make songs dip in and out of different decades of rap and meshes them together to make a unique sound.

Royce da 5’9”, member of the rap group Slaughterhouse, is a rapper from Detroit that gained fame from collaborations with Eminem. Royce uses his genius lyrical style and flow to paint a picture of what is going on in each song.

Each song on this album is unique in every way. Samples from various guitars, pianos, and sounds that cannot easily be identified are used in a special way. DJ Premier and Royce da 5’9” worked well together and chose an excellent ensemble of rappers to feature on the album.

These rappers include: Schoolboy Q, Killer Mike, Mac Miller, Ab-Soul, Dwele, Slaughterhouse (Joe Budden, Crooked I, Royce da 5’9”, and Joell Ortiz), Common, and Jay Electronica. Each rapper brings their own style that works well with others. The beats created and produced by DJ Premier elevates each verse in the songs to its fullest potential.

All of the songs on the album come together as a whole and end up making a great track list of instant classics.

“Underground Kings” is one of the most aggressive song in terms of production and lyrical delivery. Killer Mike and Ab-Soul create verses along with Royce da 5’9” that elevate each other and make the song as a whole better.

All together this album is a masterpiece in its own respect.
