Let’s Watch: Maleficent

Maleficent is a fantasy/action movie that is a live-action re-imaging of Walt Disney’s 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty. The movie portrays the view of the antagonist, Maleficent.
The new movie was a huge success, making $758 million worldwide and becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 2014.
Maleficent, played by Angelina Jolie, is a powerful fairy who gets betrayed by a young boy who she fell in love with.
The young boy always told Maleficent he was going to grow up and live in the castle and he did just that. He betrayed the fairy, and cut her wings off and became the king. Maleficent is hurt by this and puts a curse on his infant princess that cannot be taken back.
The princess will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a sleep like death on her 16th birthday.
The only way to break the curse is by true loves kiss and according to the King and Maleficent, true love does not exist, therefore, the princess will never be woken.
While the princess is growing up, Maleficent watches over her and the young princess calls her “fairy god-mother”. Maleficent begins to adore the girl and tries to undo the curse. Maleficent discovers that the princess is the only one who can restore peace within the land.
“This film is great. I didn’t think I would like it. I didn’t rush to the cinema to see it. But having had it play in the background constantly I have found myself getting drawn in. It is beautiful, enchanting, funny and scary (for the little ones at least). Each time I’ve watched it I have seen something new,” says a movie reviewer.
This movie gives a fascinating spin on an old fairy tale and it gives viewers an opportunity to experience the tale all over again.
