U.S. Open Week 1

The U.S. open is an annual tennis tournament being held this year in New  York. Starting on August 31st, this tournament will last until September 13th. Roger Federer, from Switzerland, won a match against Belgian tennis player Steve Darcis. The match ended 6-1,6-2,6-1, in favor of Federer. UK player Andy Murray defeated French player Adrain Manmarino in a match ending 5-7, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1. American John Isner defeated Russian Mikhail Youzhny in a tough match lasting several hours ending in a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Switching courts to the women’s singles, Czech player Petra Kvitova defeated American Nicole Gibbs in a match ending 6-3, 6-4. Tuzla native Andrea Petkova defeated Ukrainian Elena Vesnina in a match ending in a score of 6-3, 7-6 (4). Romanian Simona Halep defeated Ukrainian Keteryna Bondarenko in a match ending 6-3, 6-4.

It has been five days since the beginning of the tournament and there have already been many retirements, wins, losses, and surprising comebacks. Roger Federer is continuing on to play German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round.

The match played by Flavia Pennetta and Monica Niculescu at Louis ARmstrong was disrupted by a drone that flew into the stadium on Thursday, September third. No injuries were reported and the USTA released a statement saying “At approximately 8:27pm on Thursday, September 03, a drone flying from the east flew into the southwest corner of Louis Armstrong Stadium during the Flavia Pennetta vs. Monica Niculescu match. No spectators were in the immediate area of the crash and there were no injuries. The NYPD responded and is conducting an ongoing investigation.”

The U.S. Open is still continuing on until September 13th in New York.
