NFL football season is back in America

After much controversy, anticipation, and lots of preseason matchups, the National Football League (NFL) season is officially here. The first game of the year and Thursday Night Football came on September 10, with the Steelers of Pittsburgh making the trip to Boston to take on the New England Patriots.

The Patriots, who are currently the football champions of the world after taking the crown of Super Bowl 49 came into the game ready to play despite much controversy during the offseason including the preseason.

The troubles for the Patriots began back in January when the Patriots were taking on the Indianapolis Colts in the American Football Conference (AFC) championship game. The Patriots won the game by a score of 45-7. However, after the game, talk of Tom Brady and the Patriots tampering with the air pressure of the football began to spark the air.  The allegations continued throughout the following weeks and well into the week of Super Bowl 49 that ended with a victory for New England over the Seattle Seahawks 28-24.  After a long trial and continued allegations that lasted most of the entire offseason, Tom Brady was suspended the first four games of the year and the Patriots were fined one million dollars.  However, the suspension towards the prized quarterback Brady was lifted and was allowed to play in the week one matchup.

The Steelers would have been better off had Tom Brady still been suspended as the veteran  showed no signs of distractions on Thursday night, torching the Steelers defense for 288 yards and 4 touchdowns, 3 of them to favorite target Rob Gronkowski.   The Pittsburgh defense began the night with some success as neither team was able to get on the scoreboard until the second half.   However, Pittsburgh was never able to recover after Brady found his big tight end Gronkowski in the end zone from sixteen yards out.  The Steelers moved the ball but had trouble finding the end zone particularly in the first half as the teams went into the locker room for halftime with the score favoring New England 14-3.

New England came out of the gate hot in the second half as the Patriots drove down the field and scored in less than five minutes to take a commanding 21-3 lead.   The Steelers were not done however as Pittsburgh was able to claw their way back into the game by controlling much of the third quarter and  scoring 11 unanswered points to diminish the lead to 21-14 with a little over eleven minutes remaining in the game.   The Patriots killed any chances of the Steelers coming back though when Brady found Gronkowski yet again from one yard out and put New England up 28-14.  The Steelers made the score look a little better when Ben Roethlisberger, who finished 26-38 for 351 yards with a touchdown and an interception, found Antonio Brown for a touchdown with two seconds on the clock remaining.  The 28-21 score did the Steelers some justice as the game was not as close as the score made it seem.

Both teams fought hard the entire game and made for an exciting first game of the 2015-16 NFL season which promises to be another fun year of professional football.
