“Hamilton” Update

Kyle Hurt, Staff Member

The musical Hamilton continues to impress as the number of sales goes through the roof in the past weeks. Adding a ninth performance to Broadway’s traditional  eight show week, the smash hit Hamilton gained over $177k this week. This is the first time ever another musical to beat The Lion King from its #1 spot since last year’s holiday break.

The added performance was sponsored by the Democratic Party. Following the performance a speech was given by none other than Hamilton fan Barack Obama. The extra performance boosted the show only a small amount past The Lion King (less than $8,000) and it’s unlikely the show will be able to do this again. This week just goes to show Lin-Manuel Miranda’s talent, and helps the hottest show on Broadway gain more attention.

Also this week, on November 12th, the Tony Administration met for the first time to determine the eligibility for ten Broadway productions for the 2016 Tony awards.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr. , and Phillipa Soo will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor/Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical categories for their respective performances in Hamilton.

This week’s Hamilton Cast Album suggestion is track #3 titled “My Shot”.

This song embodies the entire meaning of the show: An immigrant, Alexander Hamiltoncomes to America to get a chance to prove himself and to become successful, but before he can change the world he must get his “shot”.

As always, I recommend listening to the suggestion of the week and also the rest of the cast album, it is a work of art.
