The 88th Annual Academy Awards

With host Chris Rock, it didn’t take long before he brought up the #OscarsSoWhite problem facing the Academy and Hollywood in general. This controversy centers around the lack of diversity among actors. Once he finished his monologue, awards were given out and if you watched the three and a half hour event, you know who won big.

Mad Max took home six Academy Awards, primarily in the art department for their skilled work in Costume Design, Make-up Design, and Special Effects. One after another each artist accepted their award, and they all praised director George Miller for his artistic leadership.

The other big awards went to cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki for his work on “The Revenant”. Lubezki won in this category three years in a row first for “Gravity” (2014), then “Birdman” (2015), and now for “The Revenant” (2016). Also, Alejandro Iñárritu won Best Director for the second year in a row for “The Revenant”. He won this category last year for “Birdman”.

The categories that were most talked about were Best Male and best Female Performance in a Leading Role. Brie Larson won for her work in “Room”. She was the front runner for the Academy Award after winning several awards this season including a Golden Globe. For Best Male performance it went to Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant”; upon receiving the award, the whole audience stood up and applauded DiCaprio for winning his first Oscar.

The biggest and last award given was for Best Picture. It was a tough category including: Bridge of Spies, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, Spotlight, The Martian, The Big Short, Room, and Brooklyn. The award was given to “Spotlight”, a story based on the work of The Boston Globes uncovering of a massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese.

The Oscars ran long, but many people left happy with some big awards. As for the controversy surrounding #OscarsSoWhite, we’ll see how the industry changes in the future, if it ever does.
