Australian PM Turnbull steals Veep’s campaign slogan

Australian prime minister, Malcom Turnbull, announced his new slogan, “Continuity and change,” which was also used by HBO’s Veep for character Selena Meyer’s fictional campaign.

The prime minister used this slogan to distance himself from the previous Australian prime minister, Tony Abbott.  To reinforce this new slogan, Turnbull mentioned it in several of his speeches. For example, in ABC’s 7:30 program, Turnbull said, ““So, as you go from one Liberal prime minister to another, you have continuity and you have change and there has been a lot of change.”

Due to the fact that the slogan was so frequently mentioned, the public soon caught onto the fact that it was also used in HBO’s series, Veep, during its fourth season. In fact, the use of the slogan by an actual politician caught the eyes of many of the shows creators. The executive producer of the show, Simon Blackwell, said that the writers came up with “the most meaningless election slogan that we could think of.”

This lack of effort towards making the slogan meaningful makes it even harder to believe that an actual, political organization used it to promote their candidate. In fact, the show’s lead actress, Julia Louis Dreyfus, tweeted that she was “dumbstruck” along with a link to a tweet containing pictures of the slogan being used on the show.

With all of the political controversy happening in America this year, an incident like this seems commonplace.
