Bryon Berg competed as the only boy from Michigan City High School in the ISHAA State Cross Country Meet on October 29, 2016.

The State meet was held in Terre Haute, IN., on one of the only courses in the country that was specifically designed for the sport. The LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course can be rearranged to create different courses of different lengths and difficulties.

He ran the five kilometers in 16:22.3. This is not far off from his typical times this season, and considering the course’s difficulty, and radical difference in weather (nearly 80 degrees Fahrenheit), it was quite the feat.

His time put him in 28 place for the boys’ race, however this was not the end of his season. Berg made Indiana’s All-Star team. He will be representing the state of Indiana while competing against other states in the Midwest region on November 19.

Berg and Louka Karallas, a junior, were driven in a mini bus by their coach to Terre Haute the night before the race.

On the day of the state meet, Berg’s teammates commuted to Terre Haute, nearly a four hour drive, to surprise him and cheer him on. Karallas was already with Berg and helped to keep the secret.
