Laporte county in the spirit of giving

Destiny Harvel, Feature Reporter

With December quickly approaching, the season of giving is upon us. Each year different charities poip up around this time of year to get people in the spirit of giving. Some local ideas for residents of the Laporte County include food pantries and community meals at local churches, and charities that people can donate to.

Another way to give back to the community this holiday season is through the Salvation Army. Each year in major locations around town, volunteers stand outside and rig bells to get people’s attention in the hopes that they will donate. To sign up to be a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, people can go online to their website (registertoring.com), enter their city or zip code and pick the best spot available to them.

There are also volunteer options online, such as Operation Christmas Child, an online charity by Samaritan’s Purse. On this website people can donate straight from there or on their own. The second option allows people to choose what goes in a shoe box and then they can drop it off at a designated spot. The closest drop off spot around Michigan City is the first United Methodist Church in Laporte.

Toys for Tots is a charity that starts in October and goes through December. It gives more children the opportunity to get toys for Christmas. The toys are distributed around the areas that the toys are collected in.

There are also many local food pantries that people can donate to. Many of them do meals before the holidays. At State Street Community Church in Laporte, they host a community meal the day before Thanksgiving and the day before Christmas Eve. At their second building, The Pax Center, they have an open community meal on Mondays and their food pantry is open Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. More charities and soup kitchens are listed below.
