Spanish four classes experience Hispanic culture in South Bend

On February 3, students from the Spanish 4 classes took a field trip and traveled to La Central Panaderia, a bakery in South Bend that is especially known for its freshly baked sweet breads, otherwise known as pan dulce. They also visited a local and small Venezuelan restaurant, the Mango Cafe.

The panaderia had multiple types of pan, such as conchas, which were the most popular among the students.

Conchas are a type of sweet bread known for their shell-like shape. They have a sugar shell pattern on top as well and are one of the most well known Mexican pastries in the United States.

“Conchas are a lot different from other types of deserts that you can eat. It is just plain bread but you can tell it is not from here,” said Senior, Kory Blacksten.

After buying bread the owner took them to the back to demonstrate how pan is made and told them how much is made fresh each day.

“Senorita brings in this bread on Day of the Dead so she wanted to take us there to try it,” said senior, Amara Lewis.

The second stop during this field trip was to a small Venezuelan restaurant, the Mango Cafe. Due to it being so small, the group filled the whole restaurant.

Here, they were able to choose from many different Venezuelan dishes including their national dish, pabéllon.

Pabéllon is a plate of rice, shredded beef in stew, and stewed black beans.

Students were also able to purchase from a wide variety of arepas and empanadas. These could contain shredded beef or chicken, shredded cheese, as well as one with just vegetables.

Many of the students also tried guanabana juice, which is made from a fruit not found in the U.S.

Along with the many food options that the trip had, this visit to the Mango Cafe allowed students the opportunity to practice their speaking skills. They ordered their meals in Spanish and the owner spent time talking to their tables and asking them questions in Spanish.

For many students this trip was an oppertunity to expand their knowledge of Hispanic culture  outside of the classroom while having fun in the process.
