Largest Mass Shooting in U.S. History

One of the most tragic events in United States history has just occurred. On the night of October 1, at around 10:00 p.m., shots began to rip through the air. A man by the name of Steven Paddock was staying in a room on the 32 floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. He busted out the windows in the hotel room and began to reign down terror upon concert goers across the street at a music festival while Jason Aldean was performing. For thousands of people this night would impact the rest of their lives. 59 people, who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, had their lives unjustifiably taken from them. For over 500 others, their injuries will haunt them of that horrific night for a very long time. It was also traumatic for all of the people that had to witness this event as well as the families of the victims.

Around 10:00 p.m. on October 1, 2017 bullets began to fly from the Mandalay Bay Hotel. It did not stop until around 10:15 p.m.. Around 10:20 p.m. police officers finally find the hall that Paddock was in. After backup arrived, policed carefully moved through the hallway clearing every room and rescuing any injured people. By 11:00 p.m. a majority of the Las Vegas strip had been closed off due to safety reasons as well as it made the police work a lot easier. After a series of breaches on the 32 floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, they found Paddock dead. Police searched for more suspects, but at the time Paddock was believed to be the only shooter. In the early hours of October 2, police were able to confirm that Steven Paddock was working alone.

This unfortunate event will impact the way outdoor concert security is from now on. It can be compared to how security at airports was increased after 9/11. Investigators actually found out that Paddock rented a room overlooking Grant Park during Lollapalooza. This is particularly unnerving, due to the fact that it is held in Chicago and that could have been very close. However, Steven Paddock never showed up to the hotel.

This very unfortunate event is the deadliest shooting in United States history. The previous deadliest shooting happened just over a year ago in Miami, Florida at Pulse Nightclub. It is very unfortunate that these events keep happening and it begs the question, will congress pass stricter gun laws? Only time will tell, but in the wake of this horrific event change may come in the near future.
