Snowflake parade kicks off the holiday season

Anna-Lisse Lenard, Reporter

This last Saturday, December 2nd, the annual Michigan City Snowflake Parade took place in the Downtown Area. It started at 4:00 P.M. on Franklin and 10th Street, and ended in front of the library about an hour later where Christmas activities took place.

The Snowflake Parade is a small winter parade that takes place every year and is specific to the city. Groups and people that represent the community come together in this festive activity, including the MCPD, school board, Girl Scouts, Soul Steppers, Reins of Life, and multiple groups from MCHS. There were 49 total filled spots in the parade.

The Michigan City High School band, choir, and football team participated. The band was set on sat on a flatbed trailer provided by Woodruff & Sons. They played a medley of holiday songs and were under the direction of band director Frank Gast.

The choir was on the ladder of a firetruck. The football team was also on a flatbed and shared the excitement and pride of their recent victories.

After the parade, citizens stayed around the Downtown Area to participate in festive activities. The annual tree lighting took place outside of the library, Christmas Carols were sung by the MCHS choir, and horse-pulled carriage rides were offered by the LaPorte County Draft Horses. Free hot chocolate and cookies were handed out, courtesy of the Fire Department.
