It is that time of the year again, the NCAA Women’s College World Series kicks off its 2019 tournament play Thursday, May 29. Like years before, this years pool of contendants is packed full of talent and should prove to keep fans at the edges of their seats. The teams competing this year at the WCWS are: Alabama, UCLA, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Arizona, Washington and Florida.
Minnesota is making their first appearance in OKC in program history, and Oklahoma State stunned softball fans by taking two of the three games from defending champions, Florida State.
Alabama and Florida battled to be back at the WCWS. Florida battled through extra innings in two of the three games, eventually triumphing the Lady Vols of Tennessee. Alabama had a tough series against a tough Texas foe, beating the gritty Longhorns in the third game.
Oklahoma returns to the WCWS hoping to capture its third title in four years. The young class that started it are now seniors and are hoping to end their Sooner career with a national title.
UCLA returns to the tournament behind star pitcher and hitter, Rachel Garcia. Garcia was recently named the 2019 player of the year for the second consecutive year. The Bruins hope to redeem themselves from falling short in the semi finals last year.
Washington returns for the second consecutive year and hopes to finish with the purple and gold confetti raining down on them by the end of the tournament. With the two ace pitchers on staff for the Huskers, they hope to bounce back from their runner-up finish last season and take home a national title.
Arizona finds themselves back at the series and are hungry for another title. The Cats are looking to bring home another title and add to Mike Candrea’s hall of fame list of achievements as head coach at Arizona.
All in all, fans better be prepared for stellar performances from all eight teams. This 2019 WCWS is going to be an action-packed one, and truly the national title is going to be a fight to the very last out, because everyone there is a contender.
