The Cityzen

Kristen Gushrowski
Kristen Gushrowski did not realize that she enjoyed writing until she took Mrs. Chastain’s journalism class. In the class, she learned the basics of writing a news article and what it takes to publish a school newspaper. Her semester final was the creation of a two-page feature newspaper spread which required two stories, photos, and statistics about one topic. Kristen remembers even working on the layout outside of class because she loved creating it so much and wanted it to be her best work. The creativity and perfection the feature allowed and required opened her eyes to how much fun writing can be. It also showed her writing can be viewed as a hobby, rather than just a school assignment. Kristen is a Senior at Michigan City High School, and this is her first year on the Cityzen staff, although she wishes she would have joined sooner! Along with being on staff, Kristen is a gymnast and is involved in National Honor Society and French Club. These interests help her to find different writing topics that not only interest but inform her readers. She feels it is important to inform others about the great things Michigan City High School is doing, and her interests inspire those topics. Being a part of the Cityzen this year will allow Kristen to inform her school about fun and exciting things that happened and allow her classmates to celebrate in the great events that Michigan City as a whole is a part of. She says there is no greater feeling than having pride in your school and your city, and she hopes her writing will help her community see that.
